Tapping and Collecting Maple Syrup
The first part to getting to Maple Syrup Fest is tapping the maple trees at Hartman Reserve to collect the sap. This is done in the spring, and the sap flows when the nights are below freezing, but the days warm above freezing. To collect the sap, you tap a hole in the tree, insert a spile, and hang something to collect the sap that will flow out! Over the years Hartman has used many different items to collect the sap, from metal cans and plastic containers, to milk jugs and totes.
